DMIC - a new way in maths!

WALT: Work collaboratively to solve word problems

My group and I were learning about decimals, in my group was : Ana, Myztique, Bryana, Uasi, and of course myself. We had to read the word problem and solve it Keep on reading to find out more!!

For the first question was 4.26 + 7.54 + 3.90 = 15.7, the first thing we did was

 4.26 + 7.54 = 11.8
then 11.8 + 3.90 = 15.7 so the answer is 15.7

The second question was 30.77 + 94.65 = 125.32

                        30.77
                       94.65
                     125.32
         so the answer is 125.32
Next is the third question which was
9639.66 + 2332.55 - 1780.30 = 10191.91, First we added 9639.66 + 2332.55 = 11872.31 then we minus 11972.31 - 780.40 = 10191.91

Thanks for reading my blog post about decimals. Hope you enjoyed learning with me.

Extension projects - technology in action!

A good number of Room 3 are also in our school year 7 and 8 extension group.  This is our group of gifted and talented students.   They were fortunate to have experts to teach them how to code through using programmes such as scratch.  Here they are sharing their games as well as inviting their peers to play.   Check it out!

Team 1 visit Team 5

It was so neat to see our year 1 and 2 teachers this morning! Teachers of Team 1 - new entrant classes spent some time with us. This was during our start up for the day where we students lead mihi, karakia and himene (greetings, prayer and hymn). This all happens before we launch into the programme for our day of learning and being at Pt England School. We loved that we could spend this time and show our Team 1 teachers how much we've grown and love taking charge in our space. They agree with us that it's a great start up to our daily learning. After meeting and greeting all our junior teachers we were treated to a song from them. This picture was taken during their song to us 'You are my sunshine'.

Mrs Tele'a to Maps

Learning about scale and perspective when mapping...

Our year 5 and 6 extension group had the task of drawing me from different angles. It was a very quick exercise where they had only 20 minutes to draw me. The rules were - no moving off their chairs and they could use any draw programme they chose.

All students selected hyperstudio to draw in. They were very focused, while I sat as still as could I kept reminding the students about the skill of 'look, look, looking' at the subject and then 'draw'.
After 20 minutes we travelled around the classroom, observing one another's attempts. Here's some of the things we found out...
- proportions are important - using a scale is a must (some drew my head too large in comparison to other body parts and positions)
- draw just what you see not the extra bits you imagine might be there
- cannot change the scale you are using - same scale for the entire picture. All the students have their own personal post on this learning experience.
Check out Room 15 and Room 17 blogs.
