Winter Learning Journey star! Hannah of Room 3

Winter Learning Journey: Poster
Week 1, Activity 5
Kia ora, Malo e lelei, Talofa Lava, Greetings to all and Welcome back to my blog. Today I'll be blogging to you, the last activity of my Winter learning Journey for WEEK 1. There will be more winter learning journey blog posts next week for WEEK 2, now back to my last WLJ activity for week 1.

Task: Create a poster that shows 3 key quotes you have heard your parents/whanau say since your return to school in level 2. They must be quotes/sayings that you find helpful from your whanau. After that post on your blog with a written explanation for each quote.

Explanation

"Make sure to wash your hands before eating dinner!" by Mum - My mum always uses this quote to me and my siblings before we start eating our dinner because it's helpful for us to remember to stay clean by washing our hands just in case we have any germs and that we don't spread it to others.

"If you feel sick, stay home and don't go to school!" by Nana-
My Nana always uses this quote to my little sister and cousin because they always got the flu or cold some days during school at level 2. So whenever she sees them cough a lot of have a really runny nose, she gives them this ginger medicine drink, puts them back into bed and tells them to stay home. She also does this with me and my other siblings sometimes.

"Sleep early for school!" - Nana and Mum
Both my Nana and Mum tells us these 4 words whenever it's a school night, they don't like us staying up long when it's a school night because they both know that when we sleep late, we won't get enough sleep and that would lead up to us  waking up very late and getting all cranky and tired for school the next day. If they catch us on our electronic devices they usually take it off us and give them back to us the next day.

Go here to see more from Hannah, one of our stars of the Winter Learning Journey.

Steev Laufilitoga Maka of Uvea comes to PES

Steev Laufilitoga Maka from the island of Uvea! Yes he's here to teach us Team 5 the art of dancing Pasifika style! All classes have had the chance to spend 1 and half hour sessions with Steev. Not only have we learned a new type of Pasifika dance but learned many lessons that go with dance. The ability to listen, follow and concentrate have been a need to experience success in these sessions.

Actions and dance are taught in repetitive cycle however never got bored as Steev has a gift for teaching dance - keeping us focused all the way throughout.  While Steev has openly shared that his spoken english is only developing, we understood all he needed us to do and were ready for more. Now that's a great teacher don't you think?! We do!!

Our health and P.E. focus fits perfectly with these special dance sessions. We have talked a lot about persevering when learning to achieve a goal. We certainly have done this with Steev his wife Ebony and baby Vito. During our most recent session Steev spoke to our whole team about how proud he was of all the students. How also to care for one another as one people. To treat all well as we never know what one may be going through. What a neat lesson for life!  Thank you Steev!  Thank you Sefa for blessing us with this opportunity to learn.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Inspire me Tour

Covenant Events - Brings 'INSPIRE TOUR' to Point England!

It was an awesome time for all our year 7 and 8 students.  Learning valuable lessons for life right now and into the future!

Here are some gems from the show:
How can we achieve the goals we set ourselves?  Have you set yourself a goal?  Do it!
ASK - don't be afraid to ask for help.  It's the best thing to do when you're stuck.   People WANT to help you!   BELIEVE IN YOURSELF - having the confidence to give things a go is another key to achieving our goals!

Through play, song and dance Maio and Levi entertained and taught us.  Likely a message we've heard from our own families, teachers and friends.   However it's always good to hear again.  Maybe for some of us we haven't had it said enough.

Our boys had the privilege of spending some up front - close and personal time with these two talented young men.  They got to have some real talk about being Pasifika, Maori and Kiwi boys who CAN achieve what they want to.

Thank you  Covenant Events - Levi and Maio for this wonderful experience.   No doubt other Manaiakalani schools will be keen to have you visit them too!

Malo lava le faasoa ma taumafai auā fanau a le Pasifika ma Aotearoa.

Team 1 visit Team 5

It was so neat to see our year 1 and 2 teachers this morning! Teachers of Team 1 - new entrant classes spent some time with us. This was during our start up for the day where we students lead mihi, karakia and himene (greetings, prayer and hymn). This all happens before we launch into the programme for our day of learning and being at Pt England School. We loved that we could spend this time and show our Team 1 teachers how much we've grown and love taking charge in our space. They agree with us that it's a great start up to our daily learning. After meeting and greeting all our junior teachers we were treated to a song from them. This picture was taken during their song to us 'You are my sunshine'.

Samoan language week

Here is our senior Samoan Group performing for our Samoan language week. It was a blessing to use our precious language this week. The theme for 2016 is “E felelei manu ae ma’au i o latou ofaga - Birds migrate to environments where they survive and thrive”. This item was performed along with a speech from Eden and George who are both fluent in the Samoan language. Samoa e - maopoopo mai! Special thanks to Chocajoe who owns the images you see looping in the background. We loved your images that capture some very precious moments from Samoa.
