Winter Learning Journey star! Hannah of Room 3
Winter Learning Journey: Poster
Week 1, Activity 5
Kia ora, Malo e lelei, Talofa Lava, Greetings to all and Welcome back to my blog. Today I'll be blogging to you, the last activity of my Winter learning Journey for WEEK 1. There will be more winter learning journey blog posts next week for WEEK 2, now back to my last WLJ activity for week 1.
Task: Create a poster that shows 3 key quotes you have heard your parents/whanau say since your return to school in level 2. They must be quotes/sayings that you find helpful from your whanau. After that post on your blog with a written explanation for each quote.
Explanation
"Make sure to wash your hands before eating dinner!" by Mum - My mum always uses this quote to me and my siblings before we start eating our dinner because it's helpful for us to remember to stay clean by washing our hands just in case we have any germs and that we don't spread it to others."If you feel sick, stay home and don't go to school!" by Nana-
My Nana always uses this quote to my little sister and cousin because they always got the flu or cold some days during school at level 2. So whenever she sees them cough a lot of have a really runny nose, she gives them this ginger medicine drink, puts them back into bed and tells them to stay home. She also does this with me and my other siblings sometimes.
"Sleep early for school!" - Nana and Mum
Both my Nana and Mum tells us these 4 words whenever it's a school night, they don't like us staying up long when it's a school night because they both know that when we sleep late, we won't get enough sleep and that would lead up to us waking up very late and getting all cranky and tired for school the next day. If they catch us on our electronic devices they usually take it off us and give them back to us the next day.
Go here to see more from Hannah, one of our stars of the Winter Learning Journey.

Cape Reinga - top of Aotearoa with my whanau. Jezakaia Room 3
Jezekaia travelled up north for a tangi. It was a sad occasion but also one where whanau got to show off special parts of Aotearoa. Go here to read more from Jezakaia.
The Cape
On 26th of June me and my family travelled to the far north for a tangi in Ngataki .Waking up at our Marae was something else! There were no trees in the way and all there were was a stunner sun and white clouds!
In our spare time we made a Road trip to the top of our country to visit Cape Reinga, it was about a 40 minute drive away from our destination. It was a beautiful experience to be out in the country area - not many people are able to travel to the top of our country but we did!
It was also good to hang out with my beautiful family. We passed some avocado farms, sand dunes and heaps of beautiful beaches on the way. It was nice being at the cape indulging the ocean view and soaking up the fresh air. I can't wait to visit again in summer with my Family.

The lucky Diamond, by Paige of Room 3
Narrative- The Lucky Diamond. Blog post of the week!
Task Description: For this weeks writing task we have done another narrative and this time it had to a free image with a tree inside. We had to use the T.O.P.S structure and this stands for title, orientation, problem, and solution.
The Lucky Diamond
Names:Bryant, James
It was a lovely morning and Bryant woke up, he grabbed his favourite thing in the world, Bryant loves adventures and he always likes to explore places. There was a little shiny diamond on his desk and he loved it. He thought it was real. He went down stairs and heard a doorbell, it was his friend James,
“What should we do today?” said Bryant with excitement.
“I saw a allway near my house, and I think it’s a new one,” he said.
They were thinking of having an adventure and so they packed up and went off with no explanation. When they got there they walked through the alleyway and spotted a lot of green trees,
“It’s a forest!” said Bryant
“WOW!” said James with his eyes wide.
As they walked they saw a path and so they followed, on the way they stopped for a snack and water. It was day time and so they thought they had to be back by afternoon.
As they continued with their adventure Bryant slipped his hand in his pocket for his diamond, but then suddenly it was gone.
“Oh no where's my diamond!” said Bryant as he screamed.
“What! Oh no!” said James with a fright.
They looked everywhere and suddenly saw in front of them a cottage, they walked towards it and didn’t know what to do, but knocked. There was an old lady that opened the door and said
“What are you doing here at this time of day?” she said with a growly voice.
James answered
“Sorry to bother you, but we're just trying to look for my friend's diamond” with a scared voice.
The lady looked with great relief and she thought in her head if she could help the little boys and see if she can find them around the forest with some help.
When they got to the end of the path of the old lady's house they went up and down the path heaps of times. It was getting too late and the afternoon was passing by, but suddenly a man was walking past and peeked down below all the way at the front of the path. He saw something shiny and he could see a shiny flicker from all they where they were and so they ran up to the man, and the man turned around and said
“Is this your little boy”
“Yes, thankyou sir for this,” Bryant said with relief.
The looked closely and thought that it might be actually real, so he told Bryant this
“Little boy I think this is most certainly real” said the man with a smiley face.
They all went to a store to check out if the diamond was real and so it was. Bryant and James' faces were with a huge smile on their face and they were filled with happiness and couldn't wait to tell their parents.
It was a brand new day and they decided to use their money that they got from the man yesterday to go on a family vacation, along with James' family too.
They had so much and were happy of how that man was so kind and honest.

Matariki Celebrations by Hannah of Room 3
Matariki Day Recap
Matariki Day!!!

Matariki celebrates and signals the beginning of Maori New Year, on that day seven stars appear in the sky, these stars are called the seven sisters.Their real names are called: Tupu-a-nuku, Tupu-a-rangi, Waiti, Waita, Waipunarangi, Ururangi and Matariki. Matariki is a big celebration of people, culture, language, spirituality and history, this celebration brings many family and friends together as one.
At our Matariki celebration at Pt England School we all were splitted into different groups, and they were Cooking, Arts and Craft, Sports and lastly Movie making (Entertainment). We were splitted into these 4 groups not only to have fun but learn the different ways we can express Matariki based on the activities we had. The group I was put into was Arts and Crafts which was actually cool because I like being creative in many ways. My highlight of Matariki was when we were drawing the patterns on our 7 stars and my table of friends I sat with were laughing and giggling when we got marker on our faces and our designs were very funny. My second highlight is learning more stuff about what Matariki is really about, I now have more knowledge of what it is.

Year. Have you celebrated MATARIKI DAY yet?

5 awesome things about my Bubble!
This was a collection of data across our class. The data shows what things we spent time on during lockdown in level 4. We used a tally chart we created on our whiteboard to then create this pie graph.
You will notice that the most popular activity for our class was spending time with our family. They were all times and activities that strengthened our family relationships.
The second most popular activity was learning to cook or bake. We also agreed that there was a lot of time spent tasting dishes our families made!
The third most popular was sleep! That's right many of us had more time to rest, some going to sleep late, some waking up late. All in all we loved our time within our bubble!

Student post of the week: Day One - how's it going by Jahzara
Congratulations to Jahzara of Room 3! This weeks blog post of the week for Room 3!
Please visit her blog here to read more of her writing. Malo aupito Jahzara!
I started my morning with a light breakfast and waited for time to pass by, 8:30 hit and I read our daily timetable. I said the school karakia and sang a little hymn. Then got straight into work. I had a little look at our reading work and waited for 9:00am to pass so I could request to join the hangout with Miss Tapuke. Finally I was able to join! Miss Tapuke explained our what our tasks were for the week. She then gave us time to ask our questions. After that we all said our goodbye's and set off to work. I read our group story again so I could have a better understanding of the story. Our story was called 'Moriori: A Story Of Survival.
I answered a few of the questions and well it was time to watch PENN. But because I was at home and no one was at school, there was no PENN. So I decided to watch something off our school Archives. I then had a little snack for morning tea and had a little break then did the bingo sheet Mrs Tele'a handed us. Later on I did some of my maths work. Had a flick through the presentation and answered a few of the questions. 12:20pm came around and it was time to call Mrs Stone about our maths work.
She explained our tasks just like Miss Tapuke did! We did a small workshop with each other, answering a few of the questions together and showing each other strategies of solving them. The call with Mrs stone and room 11 maths class was a bit Tragic. It was really noisy! But it was still a lot of fun :) Mrs stone then removed us from the call and again, we did our work.
It was then lunch time! I had a pie! It was amazing :) I had a little play outside on our trampoline and also played around with my younger sister Eva. 2:00 hit and it was the end of my lunch break :) It was time to do some home class learning. Usually we do FIOP (finish it off properly), Blog commenting or our inquiry work which is Te Whare Tapa Wha. So I decided to do FIOP. I eventually got to finish some work off and finally it was 3:00pm which means school was officially over!
I had an amazing day, I'm still not used to learning at home but I'll have to get used to it eventually.
Stay safe everybody and hope you had an amazing day! God bless you all xox

Day 1: Distance Learning
Talofa lava to our teachers! We farewelled our children yesterday afternoon hastily due to the late but important announcement that we were moving very quickly into level 3 then 4 mode to stop Covid-19 from spreading.
During our final korero, I shared with the children that they were heading home no for a normal holiday but rather to go home AND actually STAY in their homes. The idea of hanging out with neighbours...picking up a mate to go bike riding, hang at the beach, for a feed of fish'n chips etc was not going to happen. The Prime Minister has instructed us 4 weeks of isolation in our whare's!
We had prepared our children with a few changes made to our team learning site which followed the Kawa of care for the learner from Manaiakalani of 'Limiting the Links'. So all connections for students were from our front page to their ONE page that hosted daily/weekly learning.
I'm stoked to share here that while some children did not attend the days we shared this new set up - they got online still - Day 1 of distance learning and got to the 2 hangouts - meets we set up across our team of 6 classes.
I must say seeing them pop up to join meet and then hearing student voices across the block of classes was a choice moment! So good! A style of learning children are accustomed to BUT this time no teacher body with to them - instead live on screen woo hoo!
Here's a screen capture of one google meet we - for maths. Had 8 at this very moment on live. Our team focus for these early days to simply connect with our learners, check in that they're doing ok, chat about how they were coping with the change AND then a bit of maths and literacy. I know it'll shift into more academic content soon but priority right now is support our children with this sudden shift in life. I'm pretty proud of our children, whanau and teachers right now!
DFI - cohort 1 of Auckland, I got to put into practice our learning around google meets, even turned the captions on AND fortunately had Dorothy Burt walk through to give me 1-1 guidance on some things I needed at that very moment! Yes - bit mā...things Dorothy and Gerard had already told us lol - hand on face emoji right here eek!
Hows that?? 3 weeks of DFI then immediately into distance learning putting into practice what we've just learned - phewww!
Looking forward to connecting with my learners today. 9am with our literacy groups then 12.30pm with our maths groups.

The ART in Samoa's Traditional Tattoo
This term has kicked off with our students being exposed to 5 different types of art and artist. Room 3 have had the privilege of studying the traditional tattoos of Samoa. Specifically the 'Tatau' or 'Pe'a' for men and the 'Malu' for women.
Discussions around how these were viewed in the past compared to today took some interesting turns! We even got to chat about Roman Reigns and how he calls his tattoos 'tribal'. Roman Reigns talked about the difference of the pe'a compared to the sleeves that many men wear proudly.
A general understanding we had is that tattoo in it's many forms mean a whole range of different things for the people who have them. Here are some reasons we came up with as to why people have tattoos. The pe'a and malu are dawned today by people who want to serve their community. The tattoo being a daily reminder for themselves of this. Again this reason may only held by some not all.
1. Cultural background and connections
2. Family and ancestral connections
3. Cosmetic: it looks good! Makes me look tough! Intimidate. To remember a special event or person
4. To promote a certain status a person has in their community
In our second round of rotations we are trying to re-create the different types of art ourselves. This picture here shows Room 3 focusing on one part of the tatau or malu to draw. One of the neat things we've learned is that the Samoan traditional tattoos are made up patterns that use only straight lines.

The Healthy Warrior Life!
Wow what a great way to spend our Monday afternoon! The team sent to teach us all about healthy living were awesome!
We had a team of 4 Vodafone Warriors lead us through a very informative session. The headings of the 3 areas they covered were: Nutrition, Sleep and Hydration. Three very important parts of our daily life. If we do a good job looking after what and when we eat, drink and sleep we will be in top shape for our learning and more!
The style of teaching used quick fun quizzes after every short talk on these areas. Chanting our team names was the way we identified which group would answer first. 'Warriors' and 'Nate is the best' were the two chants.
No doubt Room 3 will swing into gear to tell you more detail about our great afternoon with the Vodafone Warriors here at Pt England School.
Special thanks to Tohu Harris, Nathaniel Roache and...can you name the rest of the team. Leave their names in the comments section to win a prize!

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Inspire me Tour
Covenant Events - Brings 'INSPIRE TOUR' to Point England!
It was an awesome time for all our year 7 and 8 students. Learning valuable lessons for life right now and into the future!
Here are some gems from the show:
How can we achieve the goals we set ourselves? Have you set yourself a goal? Do it!
ASK - don't be afraid to ask for help. It's the best thing to do when you're stuck. People WANT to help you! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF - having the confidence to give things a go is another key to achieving our goals!
Through play, song and dance Maio and Levi entertained and taught us. Likely a message we've heard from our own families, teachers and friends. However it's always good to hear again. Maybe for some of us we haven't had it said enough.
Our boys had the privilege of spending some up front - close and personal time with these two talented young men. They got to have some real talk about being Pasifika, Maori and Kiwi boys who CAN achieve what they want to.
Malo lava le faasoa ma taumafai auā fanau a le Pasifika ma Aotearoa.

DMIC - a new way in maths!
WALT: Work collaboratively to solve word problems

My group and I were learning about decimals, in my group was : Ana, Myztique, Bryana, Uasi, and of course myself. We had to read the word problem and solve it Keep on reading to find out more!!

For the first question was 4.26 + 7.54 + 3.90 = 15.7, the first thing we did was
4.26 + 7.54 = 11.8
then 11.8 + 3.90 = 15.7 so the answer is 15.7

The second question was 30.77 + 94.65 = 125.32
30.77
94.65
125.32
so the answer is 125.32

9639.66 + 2332.55 - 1780.30 = 10191.91, First we added 9639.66 + 2332.55 = 11872.31 then we minus 11972.31 - 780.40 = 10191.91

Fiafia night - our time to shine!
Samoa, year 8 student of Room 3 shares about her highlights of our Fiafia night!
This year will be last year attending Pt England School. And I am so glad that I could be a part of the fiafia for 2018! I was so proud to be a part of the Tongan Girls Group. Being in the Tongan girls group and leading the way, is a lot of work, but it all paid off, because our girls went out there and performed there hardiest. Out of every group that performed the Tongan girls had the largest group!
Please visit Samoa's blog to read more from her!
On the 12th of April we had our annual FiaFia night. The weather wasn't too great, but we still had an amazing turn out from our students and whanau's. although the weather wasn't too great, we still had an amazing evening! As a MC for the evening along with Tevita, Noah and shenna, I was so proud of how confident and talented they were. Every student that performed looked so beautiful.

Nekflix - Manaiakalani Film Festival #10
You sit down to watch telly, maybe Netflix and you can't decide what to watch. You end having an hour skipping around channels, a smorgasboard of some tasty and maybe not so morsels of film. Room 3 were similar in not being able to settle on just one film, instead created a film that combined 3 ideas. We've called our film - NeKflix! See if you can piece together the three different storylines. This is one of two movies Room 3 have planned and produced to celebrate 10 years of the Manaiakalani Film Festival.
We hope that you enjoyed your time at the cinemas celebrating and now are ready to watch again - or maybe for the first time our movie 'Ask your Aunty'. Be sure to leave us some feedback and your footprint so we can share the love right back with you!
