Term 3 has arrived! As usual our amazing teacher's provided us with an immersion assembly. Our PES way of capturing, hooking us into learning for the term. The Olympics always creates a positive energy, match this with our fun items today - we are soooooo ready to dig deep and wide to learn! Here we go PES, healthy me healthy you! Time to GO FOR GOLD!!

 This is my 2018 visual mihi, in the top left corner it shows that sport is a part of my life and I really enjoy playing sports and just having fun, also always finding a new team new brother hood to join.
In my right corner is the bible and a verse from Pslam, that shows that I am a child of god and will always worship him. Blog of the month! Money matters by Mitchell Room 3

Hey you! Are you looking for some ways to save money? Do you spend too much money on things you don’t need? Do you need more money for more important stuff? Well here is a solution I think will end all your problems. 

Here are some optional ways you could save money. Firstly you should start putting money aside. If you earn pocket money from your parents daily instead put it in a money box that you can’t touch or maybe only spend around 3 - 4 dollars. Here’s a challenge : If you want to you can put away every 5 dollar note you find or receive and spend all of it at the end of the year. Also it is good to save for the future in-case of an emergency. You could even hide a 10 dollar note in a book for an emergency when you run out. This will help you to save more money and also think better for what could happen if you run out during a hard time.

Another idea includes to stop buying things you don’t need. For Example : instead of buying chocolate bars, bubblegum packs , bags of potato chips after school, save it for something more useful like school stationary or even to reward yourself at the end of the year buy something you like or have been wanting for so long.  Purchasing items you need will prevent you from buying things you don’t need in the future. For Example when you become a adult and you really want this new phone everyone else is getting, instead pay your rent and save for it later. I do think this will help you to realize what’s more important in life. 

Finally the last way to save money is to shop smart. If you go shopping at the mall and you want to buy some shoes from a store you could look at the discounts they currently offer in the store. Maybe they would have a discount with some items - $150 black chucks with a 20% off discount. Or to shop even smarter if you have time, I would recommend to go to every store in the mall and compare the prices of the exact item. I do think that this will save money. Even if it’s by 1 dollar. If you are buying a chocolate milkshake for $5.50 maybe the ice cream shop a few steps away offers to sell it for $4.00 

Now that you have read some ways you could save money you could use these tips next time you go shopping. Remember think shop and save smart. It could save you a couple of dollars in the future.

Ask Your Aunty! Manaiakalani Film Festival #10

 Got a problem you cannot solve? Want the answer to love and life? Ask your Aunty. It's a fun spin on some questions we have as youth and some typical answers we often receive.

This is one of two movies Room 3 have planned and produced to celebrate 10 years of the Manaiakalani Film Festival.

Flounders made us do it!!

Read this post from Noah in year 7.  I love the way he writes 'Flounders made us walk...'

Flounders made us walk down to Riverside Ave; Today were catching flounders not to eat but to farm! Where are floundering in partnership with Kauri Flats school who are also catching flounder.

Pt england walked down to Riki road to catch some flounder, we sang 3 Himene (Hymn) and said a Karakia (Prayer) Mr Burt also said another prayer for safe journey and a good day. Cant wait to see the flounder grow and get bigger.

Farming Flounder with Kauri Flats School

 Have you heard of farming flounder?  Well for a lot of us in Room 3 this is something very new.  We are delighted to share that we are in partnership with Kauri Flats school to farm flounder.

This morning our entire school headed to our Tamaki riverside to support our school flounder team.  We said karakia and sang himene as part of this support. We have never done this before as a school so as you can imagine it was very special time. We have just met the team who have returned and according to one student we have caught more than 20 baby flounder. They are so tiny they look to be about 2 - 3cm in length. They will be placed in our special flounder tank where they will cared for as they grow. Congratulations to the the flounder project team. We look forward to seeing what happens next with this project.

My Reo Māori Kūki ’Āirani.'

This year's theme is`Ei rāvenga nāku i te tuatua i tōku reo Māori Kūki ’Āirani ka anoano au i te turuturu ā tōku ngutu`are tangata `ē te matakeinanga. An encouraging home and community environment is what I need to build my love and my confidence to speak my reo Māori Kūki ’Āirani.'
Kia Orana from the students of Pt England School. The week past we had the opportunity to practice using the Cook Island language! In team 5 we sang himene in the Cook Island language as well as practicing some other basic phrases to start us off everyday!

 We are so very proud of our year 7 & 8 students who took the lead in preparing this beautiful range of items. They gave up every lunch time to practice together for our Friday school assembly. A huge thank you to Mrs Lagitupu and Roimata's mum Puna who helped week long.  You are awesome!

Student blog post of the week! Cameo - coding Scratch game

Intro:
Have you ever created a game using code? Well if you have you should be excited
Task: For the past 10 weeks my partner, Seini and I were assigned to create a game on scratch using our knowledge from last terms experience. The theme was based on space. We needed to include space facts that we read off sites and set challenges for the main sprite in our game.

Starting our Game
Getting started was not a problem but moving on to the next levels was quite tricky. We had to broadcast our sprite on to another backdrop and add a code to the backdrop to receive the broadcast so it would switch backgrounds. If that second step wasn't included than the background would stay the same which was frustrating at times.

Problem Solving
Our second level had the most issues, when trying to get our sprite (spaceship) to shoot at the enemies. Luckily, we had the internet! Tutorials were really useful when we had no help from Zoe. We were eager to learn and extend our knowledge of coding especially if we didn't have an experienced coding adult in the room who worked at O.M.G Tech to help us with it.

Highlight Levels
Level three and four were our easiest levels to work on. The third level had 15 martians attacking and one bullet point where you had to get to; to receive your bit of space information. Our fourth and last level, showed the earth orbiting the sun and had some obstacles around it to block the sprites way from reaching earth.

Conclusion
Unfortunately, my partner and I were terrible at communicating. We also weren't the best group at managing our time as well as w could have. Our game could have been better and more complex if we had done so. So these are one of the main things we need to work on for next time. Overall though putting beside our communication Seini and I created an amazing game and I especially thank her for that.

Te Taiao O Tamaki

Term 1 saw our cluster come together throughout the term through our shared focus on 'Te Taiao o Tamaki'. Our place - our space - our environment. This went hand in hand with our year's value of responsibility. Our Pt England way of expressing this is using te reo, 'Kaitiakitanga i nga wa katoa', Guardians of our all things.

 Our students typically in term 1 focus on belonging to Pt England. This time around it was this focus with the addition of looking up and across further than our school gates to the rest of Tamaki. Participating in our 'River talks' production right here at Omaru creek alongside other children of Manaiakalani was an experience we all learned so much from.

 All the learning this term was brought together by our cluster celebration that took place at Te Oro, our Glen Innes Music and Arts Centre. The displays were wonderful in catching our attention and imagination, aided aptly by the student presenters found at every stand. Student post of the week! Yvonne Room 3

One week ago for our reading task we had a task with two readings, I found this a bit hard as there were two different texts involved, so I have been working on this throughout the weekend. The first text was about "Water as the source of life" we had to research and use the texts provided to find two different cultures and compare their beliefs on water. The second text is about Tarakura of the Rangitaiki plains, we had to find the definitions for words and answer the questions about myths. I also made this WANTED poster, read my presentation to find out why.

Nau mai - haere mai!

Talofa lava! It is with joy that we greet and welcome you to Rooom 3's blog for 2016. We have a really neat bunch of students who make up the fantastic Room 3! We have had a week of settling in - showing our new members in year 7 our special Team 5 learning space. We are looking forward to our parents meeting with our teachers in the week to come. Please remind your parents or caregivers that our time sheets will be out soon. Be sure to select the time slot that works best for your whanau. We have a number of exciting events coming up this term in the form of our garage sale, fiafia and year 8 leadership camp. Look out for our newsletter that will be coming home this week. Our video shows part of a farewell to Ms Tito who is now starting her new journey in the north. Also our dear year 8's of 2015 who are now in their new schools as year 9. We look forward to seeing you in and around our school.

Right Time Right Place

Room 3 Manaiakalani Film for the 2015 Film Festival!!    Well done to Iisa, his team of animators and Room 3 for creating this awesome movie!  The combination of graphic art, animations and camera shots is fantastic.  The message of being in the right place at the right time is useful for today's digital age!   Let's make use of this movie and remember to be in the 'Right Place Right Time with the Right Attitude!'

Cindy in the house! School Production on now!!

For all of Term 3, our school has been working hard on our school production, 'Cindy In Da House'. I have recieved a part in it as one of the main characters. We have been working hard on the play all term. The play is a remix of the original Cinderella story, with a GI influence.

Characters:
There are 8 main characters, along with 6 secondary characters. Everyone else in the play is either a technician, a dancer, or a stagehand. I am one of 2 friends of Josh, the 'Prince' of the play. Cindy, as you could probably guess, is the 'Cinderella' of the play, the one that gets tormented by her ugly stepsisters and stepmother.

Not only am I an actor, I am also a dancer and an animator. Many others are too, as we are putting in all the effort we can to make this a great show. We have three shows on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week. I highly encourage those that have children attend to Pt England to come to one of the performances, as the dancers, actors, singers, technicians, animators, stagehands and caregivers are all working hard.

Attitude - Friendships are important.

ATTITUDE PART 2: All about friendships.

Here are some key-pointers from our Swag...South African born... lower Auckland Attitude Presenter Dan!   Read and read again - this is useful for us to remember - young and old! Mrs Tele'a tried hard to keep up with all the gems shared on this morning. So much laughter, truths and helpful tips for today's exciting world of year 7 & 8 students! Here's only some of the awesomeness from this session:

Myths about friendships

• I am the only one who feels like this.   Actually everyone feels this struggle at times
• It just happens.  Actually best of friendships take a lot of time
• It’s about quantity.   Quality is really important - not the quantity!  If we become FB, instagram, youtube famous then this will bring us plenty of friends.   

4 - 5 friends is what research suggests is a good number of friends to have.

Things that don’t work!

• Mean humour:   Crossing lines with the jokes...before long it all goes wrong.  Funny is not stink - cruel - mean.  Never mock about things you can’t change - body parts, culture, families, beliefs.  What do you do if you cross the line???  Best thing to do is SAY SORRY.  It’s powerful to apologise.   Mean humour is like sunburn...no one can see it cos it’s under your uniform...your friends can’t see it or know it - they hit it and only you feel the hurt...
• Back stabbing:  Back stabbing backfires...people will grow not to like being around you because you are negative to be around.
• Smothering: being around people TOO MUCH, give people space - this is healthy.  Smothering is not good - be kind and tell them you need some space.
• Showing Off: Boys and girls can do this differently.  Girls can be through talking and saying things...boys tend to show off through doing silly things.  Don’t pretend to be somebody you’re not to get friends to like you.   Pick your times when you want to be fun and show-off - class time?? Not even ea!
• Bullying: physical, cyber, verbal, mental, written...YOU the person feeling this pressure have NOTHING wrong with you - you don’t have to change.  It’s the person being cruel that needs to be changed.  TALK to someone you trust that can help you.  It’s really easy to fix.   Telling someone... it’s not a weakness it makes you SMART AND STRONGER!

THINGS THAT WORK!!

• REMEMBER NAMES:use a method to help you remember peoples names.  Their name is their most favourite word to hear - it’s true!  Think of something that sounds close to their name to help you remember.   Names are important!
• LEARN TO LISTEN: learn to ask good questions of your friends and actually listen to what they say.  Don’t talk the whole time and then walk on...ask questions of them too - find out what they are up and possibly in need of.   Be a good listener!!
• SAY A GOOD WORD: be sure to say a good word - encourage especially in those hard moments.  Hard times like a tough sports game, a challenging task in class, that moment when you can tell your friend might want to give up.   A good word does plenty!!
• KEEP secrets: there are 3 secrets YOU SHOULD NOT KEEP hurting themselves, hurting others, someone is hurting them.  Secrets are not things to always keep.  
• BE yourself:

This is a small range of highlights from our year 8 Leadership Camp. This was held in the final week of term 1 2015. It served the purpose of bringing the oldest students at PES together, to get to know one another more, figure out together how to best lead at Pt England School. An acronym we decided to go with is SWALL - show what awesome looks like. This is just what the year 8 students did! Looking forward to the year ahead with these amazing student leaders! Introducing Room 3!

Here we are - the most good looking of the year 7 and 8 students at PES!   We've kicked off the year in style and are excited daily with all that unfolds in this special place.   We're loving our change in teachers for literacy and numeracy.  We arrive on time, wearing our uniform with pride and practicing the Pt England Way all day - everyday!   We're learning very quickly of the privileges and responsibilities of being the oldest children in the school.   We've got swimming on next week, a trip to the Polyfest and even a year 8 Leadership Camp this term.  So much to look forward to!  Please come on through for a visit whenever you can, we'd love to show you around ourselves.   Matapone e!  Keep it real people!
